Six Players Who Could Form Part Of Hunt’s Chiefs Plans

With Gavin Hunt officially been unveiled as Kaizer Chiefs new head coach, we take a look at six players who could prove pivotal to the coach’s plans to bring back the glory days to Amakhosi.

The Siya crew first reported back in June that the coach was in talks with the Soweto giants and three months later they confirmed his appointment on a three-year deal.

Now, as he plans to end the club’s five-year trophy drought, Hunt will be heavily reliant on some of Amakhosi’s core players.

Among them is goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who spent much of the 2019/20 campaign sidelined due to injury as Daniel Akpeyi held down the fort between the sticks for Ernst Middendorp’s side.

Having seemingly overcome his injury woes, the 33-year-old could form a vital part of Hunt’s plans. Hunt is known for his defensive organisation, which is built on a solid goalkeeper, while Khune’s distribution could be a vital weapon for Hunt’s transitional play.

Reeve Frosler, who managed to win the Absa Premiership under Hunt in the 2016/17 season, will be key for the 56-year-old next season.

Frosler’s versatility was a bonus for Middendorp in the past season with the 23-year-old able to switch to either full back position or feature in a deeper midfield role when required.

Up front, Hunt will be looking to build around Serbian forward Samir Nurkovic who has enjoyed a stellar debut campaign in the Absa Premiership. For much of his time at Wits, Hunt has been crying out for a consistent number nine.

In Nurkovic, Hunt has found a proven goalscorer and Hunt’s direct style of play could suit the man who scored 14 goals in the last campaign. Hunt might have to wait a few weeks for a fully fit Nurkovic after the Serbian recently underwent surgery.

While Hunt will no doubt be looking to add his own reinforcements, the club’s pending CAS case could force him to look in-house until the matter is resolved.
