The 2019/20 Absa Premiership featured breakout performances from the likes of Samir Nurkovic, who notched 19 goal contributions (13 goals, six assists) in 26 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs, as well as Gabadinho Mhango and Peter Shalulile, who share the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot with 16 goals each for Orlando Pirates & Highlands Park respectively. However, the firm favourite for the yet-to-be-announced PSL Player of the Season award is Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane. The 31-year-old provided 26 goal contributions (14 goals, 12 assists) in all competitions, earning praise from fans and commentators alike.
In the latest episode of The Carwash podcast with Teko Modise & Sean Roberts, Modise breaks down why Zwane deserves the award more than any other player, highlighting his consistency over the past two seasons. ‘The General’ also makes a bold promise stating plainly, “If Themba doesn’t win, I’ll give him one of my awards”, in reference to the two awards that he has in his collection. The PSL hasn’t announced if/when they’ll host an award ceremony for the 2019/20 campaign, and with a new season on the horizon, the possibility looks slim, especially after this year’s Ballon d’Or was cancelled.
