Pirates’ Squad Depth Lauded, 'Changes Made The Impact'

The depth in the Orlando Pirates squad has been lauded as the team has showed great improvement in performances since their 3-0 thrashing of Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN8 semi-finals last weekend.

The Buccaneers claimed their first three points of the season on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium and have moved to 6th place on the log standings.

Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids, who led the team in the absence of head coach Josef Zinnbauer, lauded the Bucs squad for managing the game well and turning things around in the second half against Siwelele after a difficult first stanza.

“If you take our first three matches, in every match there was three to five changes, (against) Cape Town City, then going to AmaZulu then Stellenbosch, a much better performance against Kaizer Chiefs and now you want to build continuity. You can talk in hindsight what is wrong and what is right, but we know it’s three games in one week and to prioritise,” said Davids, speaking to the media.

“We felt the effects of it in the first half but that’s what we’ve got used to. We’ve got to get used to it because of our schedule coming up, it’s CAF, it’s the league, it’s the MTN, it’s the Nedbank and if you want to push your players in terms of the conditioning you have to do it early in the season knowing that we did not get a six week pre-season. We felt it in the first half but the squad we have was able to then turn it around in the second half with the changes to make the impact we needed,” the coach added.
