In 2004, Jose Mourinho announced himself as football’s next managerial megastar as FC Porto managed to knock Manchester United out of the UEFA Champions League in stunning fashion. Leading Mourinho’s charge to the top was one of Mzansi’s very own, Benni McCarthy. Check it out!
With the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 having commenced, we throw it back to the time where South African hearts were beaming with pride and a certain Mourinho made the football world stand up and take note.
Facing Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in a Round of 16 clash, Mourinho’s FC Porto were easily branded the underdogs of the tie. The Red Devils however, were in for a big surprise as McCarthy was in red hot form, ready to wreak havoc.
Also flying the South African flag high was Quinton Fortune, who in fact opened the scoring for Manchester at the Estádio do Dragão.
McCarthy then cancelled Fortune’s 14th minute opener with a stunning volley halfway through the game. Benni came up clutch with 12 minutes remaining and produced a powerful headed goal that gave Porto fans hope of going all the way.
Videos of Benni’s brace against United surfaced social media this week, which remains one of the Bafana Bafana legend’s most memorable individual performances.
