Stars Send Wits Crashing Out

Telkom Knockout

Result: Free State Stars 1-0 Bidvest Wits

Date: 03 October 2015

Venue: Goble Park

Free State Stars defeated Bidvest Wits 1-0 to secure their spot in the Telkom Knockout quarterfinals.

Wits nearly opened the scoring inside the opening minute but Lupeta's snap-shot from th edge of the box sailed inches wide of the upright.

Joaquim Lupeta then turned provider a few minutes later when he picked out Jabulani Shongwe in the box, but the midfielder headed wide of the upright.

Wits continued to pile on the pressure and Lupeta was proving to be a nuisance for the Stars defence, as he forced Diakite into good stop with a stinging effort.

Moeneeb Josephs was called into action at other end when he did well to keep out Danny Venter's curling free-kick from the edge of the box.

There was no shortage of chances in the first half and Wits should have broken the deadlock in the 25th minute when Lupeta played Sibusiso Vilakazi, who forced Diakite into a fine save.

Gavin Hunt decided to change things after 60 minutes, as introduced Calvin Kadi to partner Lupeta upfront, while Vilakazi had been withdrawn.

It was Stars who broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute and in spectacular fashion, as Venter drilled home a sublime effort into the far corner from 25-yards out.

The home side could have extended their lead a minute later but Paulus Masehe somehow headed over from six-yards out, after getting on the end of Venter's corner.

Wits pushed for an equaliser and went close in the 75th minute, as Mahlambi did well to skip past two defenders, before firing a low effort just wide of the mark.

Andrea Fileccia had a chance to seal the win for Ernst Middendorp's five minutes later but the Belgian's lob flew just wide of the post.

Ea Lla Koto managed to hold for the win, despite a late surge from Wits, to make sure their name is in the pot for the Last eight draw.

Here's how they lined up:

Free State Stars: Diakite, Masehe, Mashego, Chakaroma, Sankara, Thlone, Ngasa, Rakoti, Fileccia, Ngcobo,  Venter

Bidvest Wits: Josephs, Allie, Hlatshwayo, Klate, Vilakazi, Pelembe, Mkhwanazi, Shongwe, Bhasera, Lupeta, Ntshangase
