Wits Net Late To Snatch TKO Title

Telkom Knockout

Result: Bidvest Wits 1-0 Bloemfontein Celtic

Date: 02 December 2017

Venue: Princess Magogo Stadium

Bidvest Wits struck late in the second half to beat Bloemfontein Celtic and clinch the 2017 Telkom Knockout crown on Saturday evening.

The early exchanges were quiet with neither team managing to carve out any opportunities in the opening 20 minutes of the game.

Gabadinho Mhango, who was returning from suspension, was causing Celtic all kinds of trouble down the wing.

Mhango came closest to scoring in the 25th minute after dribbling past players and firing a deflected shot against the upright with Amr Gamal missing out on the rebound.

The remaining minutes of the first half were quiet with neither team managing to create any clear cut chances.

Tshepo Rikhotso found his  name in the referees book after a foul on Mhango at the start of the second half.

Celtic applied early pressure and had consecutive corners but failed to convert opportunities.

In the 61st minute, Darren Keet made a crucial save to keep his side in the game as Celtic looked to up the tempo of the second half.

Gamal had an effort from the edge of the box only to see his strike saved by Celtic shot-stopper Patrick Tignyemb in the 76th minute.

Wits' pressure finally paid of in the 90th minute when Gamal set up Vincent Pule, who neatly flicked home to give his side a 1-0 lead with seconds remaining.

That proved to be the final bit of action as Wits ran out 1-0 winners to claim a morale boosting victory and much needed silverware.
