SuperSport Eliminate TKO Champions

Telkom Knockout

Result: SuperSport United 1-1 Baroka FC (SuperSport won 3-2 on penalties)

Date: 19 October 2019

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Defending Telkom Knockout champions Baroka FC were bundled out in the first round after losing to SuperSport United on penalties.

SuperSport head coach, Kaitano Tembo made two changes from their win over Highlands Park in the MTN8 final, as Onismor Bhasera returned from suspension, while Bongani Khumalo took the place of Evans Rusike. On the other hand, Bakgaga were boosted by the return of captain Mduduzi Mdantsane, while Lawrence Ntswane got a rare start.

Matsatsantsa started playing with a high tempo and they could have grabbed an early goal from set-piece situations but they just could not find the finishing touches.

Baroka goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze was the busier of the two shot-stoppers in the closing phase of the first stanza and kept his side in the game with crucial interceptions from set-plays.

After a scoreless first half, Bakgaga were awarded a penalty 11 minutes into the second after Bhasera was judged to have brought down Richard Mbule in the box. Mdantsane kept his cool to break the deadlock from the spot-kick.

United almost equalised moments later after Bradley Grobler unleashed a volley from the left side of the box that unfortunately hit the crossbar.

SuperSport were living dangerously in the latter phase, opening gaps at the back by sending numbers forward but they nearly snatched the equaliser eight minutes before time after a long cross found Grant Kekana unmarked at the back post but his effort was cleared on the line.

Grobler finally secured the equaliser for SuperSport with the last kick in regulation time, after tapping home a cross at the far post to send the match to extra-time.

Matsatsantsa had the momentum in extra-time, but neither side could find a clear-cut opening in the extra 30 minutes which ultimately sent the game to penalties.

It was SuperSport who held their nerve in the shoot-out to triumph 3-2, with Thamsanqa Gabuza netting the winning spot-kick on the night.
