Khune Uncensored – Heartbroken Chiefs Skipper Blasts Teammates

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, gave a brutally honest post-match interview after another defeat to Orlando Pirates, stating that some players aren’t giving it their all.

The Amakhosi captain was again on the losing side as he went into another Soweto Derby, with Thembinkosi Lorch and Justin Shonga scoring either side of Leonardo Castro’s goal to secure the Buccaneers’ spot in the Telkom Knockout final.

Yesterday’s result meant that it’s not 11 games since Chiefs beat Pirates in normal time, and Khune says that is simply ‘not acceptable’.

Speaking to SuperSport after the game, a visibly emotional Khune said, “As heartbroken as I am, I can feel for all these people that travelled to come and watch the team. They were expecting us to make them proud, but we disappointed them yet again.

“We tried, but things just didn’t go our way. And as much as we created, we couldn’t convert. Our defending, we have to just go back and look ourselves and say ‘is this us? Is this Kaizer Chiefs? Is this the players that deserve to play for the team?’, I doubt.

“All the mistakes that we keep making and committing, they all lead to goals, it’s bad. We’re a big team, we can’t be conceding goals like this. Schoolboy errors week in, week out, it leads to us not winning matches. We want to keep clean sheets, we want to work as hard as the other team. We keep pushing each other in training, but it’s heart-breaking to concede goals like this.

“Shonga went for a bicycle kick, we then we had three of our defenders, one goes tight, and one must come out for anything that happens, because that led to a goal. There was a ball that was played into the box, Mario (Booysen) cleared the ball, we couldn’t take responsibility to clear the second ball. They played it wide, across, we had numbers in the box, we could have avoided that situation, but we just couldn’t. I don’t know how.

“Kaizer Chiefs faithfuls deserve better. We’re going to have a man to man talk right now in the changing rooms with the players, we must account. We must take the blame, these people deserve better.

“It’s all up to us. As much as we want to break records and play as many derbies as we can, we’re going to have to look back at the end of the day at the end of our careers. Itumeleng Khune played in 27 derbies, but what has he won in those derbies? It’s about time we protect this badge, it’s about time we protect one another, and make our Amakhosi faithfuls proud.

“It doesn’t make a difference whether Itumeleng Khune played 30, Shabba played 30, but what matters most is what have you achieved in your career, what have you achieved in the derby? It’s a bitter pill to swallow. I won’t look at the numbers, how many derbies I’ve played, I will look at my contribution to the team. How much I’ve contributed to the success of the team. If it’s not enough, then I’ll have to look at myself again and tell the bosses that ‘hey, maybe I don’t deserve to be wearing this badge’.

“We can’t continue losing against Pirates like this. It’s unacceptable, it’s not on. We have to look at ourselves and say do we deserve to wear this jersey. Do we deserve to make these people happy? If not, we might as well just tell Bobby (Motaung) that this badge is too heavy for us.

“Some of us we’re giving our all in each and every match, but it seems like not all of us are doing that. We’re not all coming to the party. We all have to go and look at ourselves as individuals and see what contribution we’re bringing to this badge.”
