TKO Time – ‘We Can’t Drop Our Tempo For The Cup’

The Premier Soccer League will return next weekend with the first round of Telkom Knockout fixtures, and one of the hopefuls is eager to keep momentum as they go into battle.

Mxolisi Kunene, who scored the winner for Maritzburg United in their last game against Baroka, insists that the current international break is good for them as a side, explaining that it gives them a chance to fix things within their ranks.

The Team of Choice have had a hot and cold start to their 2019/20 campaign so far, but recently picked up consecutive victories over Chippa United and Bakgaga after losing three of their opening five league games.

Now, as they prepare to face Bidvest Wits in their first cup game of the season in the TKO, Kunene has given a big of insight into their mindset as they switch focus from league action, telling the club’s official website, “This long FIFA break is going to help us a lot to correct the mistakes we made in the past few games… As players, our mindset is very good as we have just won our last two matches. This shows that we are on the right track.

“We are focusing on the Telkom Knockout that is coming soon and we feel we are ready for the challenge. The cup competition is very important to us. We can’t drop our tempo just because it’s a cup match and we feel it is very important for us to do well in the cup as well.”

Maritzburg have only lost three of their last 14 games – including the relegation play-offs last season – stretching back to April, and will be buoyed by their recent back-to-back wins in the league.
