‘They Would Love To Win A Cup…’

Focus turns to the Telkom Knockout this weekend, and there are dreams to be made as the second cup competition of the season gets underway on Friday night.
Maritzburg United host Bidvest Wits on Friday night in the first game of the weekend at their home venue, Harry Gwala Stadium, where they have lost just four times in 2019 and are unbeaten on a Friday night there since 2017.
Eric Tinkler, who has overseen a major change in the Team of Choice’s fortunes since his arrival earlier in the year, says that the players are eager to pick up a victory against his former club, insisting that they feel the club can win their first ever trophy this season.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Tinkler said, “You want to go as far as you can – you want to create a winning mentality at the club and one would like to create a bit of history; the club has never won a cup competition and here we have an opportunity to try and change that…
“The players themselves spoke about this at the beginning of the season, we spoke about their individual objectives, and all of them said they would love to win a cup.”
Meanwhile, he also went on to add, “We are trying to create consistency in terms of our performances, you know our last two games - Chippa we started the first half well but dropped off in the second half. Baroka we started the first half poorly but got better in the second half. What you want is consistence performances throughout, both halves need to be equal.”
Maritzburg go into the game after securing back-to-back victories over Chippa United and Baroka FC, and will be itching to make it 15 games at home on a Friday night without losing.
