Benni McCarthy is evidently disappointed with his side’s lack of hunger overall, but also in cup competitions, which they are no strangers to winning.
Cape Town City have won two cup competitions since their inaugural season in 2016/17, namely, the Telkom Knockout cup and the MTN8.
The Citizens have been to a cup final in every season since being a Cape Town-based club, however, for this campaign, they have only the Nedbank Cup to look forward to, as they have made early exits in both the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout campaigns.
“It is stressful and frustrating but at the end of the day, a player must want to win it and want it with all their hearts and I think we haven’t done enough to want to even win the MTN8 again, it was easy to lose because we did it the previous season,” McCarthy said.
“The Telkom is the same, last season we went out the first round and this season, it was just far too easy, as much as you want to change a player’s mindset and the way of thinking about success and even the money because at the end of the day you play for those things.
“But, the main goal is that you play to have a better life because when you win cups you get the bonuses but we don’t seem to want it at the moment,” he added.
