With pressure mounting for Orlando Pirates co-coaches Mandla Ncikazi and Fadlu Davids in the closing stages of the season, a former star has shared his thoughts on the duo’s contribution to the team.
In the domestic front, Pirates have had a disappointing season after failing to challenge for any of the trophies, while the team is also out of the race for the sought-after second CAF Champions League spot to join league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
However, the Soweto giants have done well in the CAF Confederation Cup by reaching the semi-finals and with a big chance to play in this year’s final of the continental competition.
While some in the fraternity have called for changes to be made in the Pirates technical team at the end of the season, some believe that Ncikazi and Davids are on course to change things around for the team and should be given more time, and one of them is former defender Tonic Chabalala.
“I think yes, they should be given another chance, because to build a team takes a while and there is a lot that goes into it with all the planning and preparation and everything. I think the good run in CAF will help the two coaches in boosting their confidence and maybe they will earn (permanent) contracts,” said Chabalala, speaking to the Siya crew.
“Yes, they might not have done well locally, but there is always a room for improvement, and you never know, the club might just decide to give them a second chance if they win the trophy. Coaching a team like Pirates takes a lot and it can be difficult for one to be able to even sleep at times because of pressure from supporters in the streets and on social media, it is hell of a job, and it takes guts for one to make it there,” the ex-no-nonsense centre-back added.
Former AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy, Gavin Hunt, Ruud Krol and Algerian tactician Adel Amrouche are some of the coaches to have been linked with the Buccaneers in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Bucs will face Libyan side Al Ahli Tripoli at Orlando Stadium this evening in the second leg of their Confederation Cup semi-final fixture after winning the corresponding match 2-0 away from home last Sunday.
