Benni On Importance Of CAF Trophy After Progressing To Next Round

Benni McCarthy Has Stressed The Importance Of Competing In The CAF Confederation Cup Competition

Cape Town City head coach, Benni McCarthy has prioritised the CAF Confederation Cup, saying that the continental competition is just as important as competing in the Absa Premiership.

The Citizens will lock horns with Mozambican outfit, Costa do Sol in the first round of the CAF Confederation Cup and Head Coach McCarthy says that the competition will be treated with the same importance as the league, adding that it is a great opportunity for the club and players to get game-time.

“Listen, I think it is a great opportunity for a club, not just for our club but I think because we are representing South African football on the continent in this competition, so I would like to take it as (seriously) as I take the league, the Nedbank, MTN8 and Telkom,” he told the Media.

“So, it is a cup competition, there is a (a) trophy to be won so I think at the end of the day it goes on your CV one day that you’ve won this and that, so I think for a coach, it is pretty nice if you can go all the way and I know a lot of football clubs in the country complains about this competition because financially it does burn a hole in your pocket when you go on into the group stages, but at the end of the day, I think the prize money is 1.2 or 5 million dollars if I am not mistaken.

“So, it is what you get for winning the league, so as costly as it is for a club, if you can go all the way and you win it then you make your money back. So I think it is like the equivalent of the European league in European football so it is not a 'micky mouse' competition.

"I would like to go all the way because that gives my team also an opportunity, players that don’t get a starting place in the league, so it gives me a chance to play your Kobola’s, as hard as he works, Mkhize is making it difficult for him to get a starting place or to play regularly, but with this competition, you keep players happy because they get 90 minutes under the belt so it provides me with that, so I want to go as far as I can,” he added.
