Absa Premiership Report: Cape Town City v Chippa United 02 March 2018
Result: Cape Town City 2-0 Chippa United
Date: 02 March 2018
Venue: Athlone Stadium
Two impressive goals from Ayanda Patosi and Lyle Lakay guided Cape Town City to a 2-0 win over Chippa United at Athlone Stadium.
The Citizens started to find their rhythm after 15 minutes and were playing on top of the visitors’ defence as they pushed for an opening goal.
Ayanda Patosi made City’s dominance count in the 24th minute after unleashing a fantastic strike from 20-yards out that dipped into the bottom corner, 1-0.
Benni McCarthy’s charges were bossing the midfield and continued to threaten going forward, while the Chilli Boys struggled to deal with the City wingers.
Lyle Lakay doubled the home side's lead on the stroke of half-time with a superb free-kick from 25-yards out that gave goalkeeper Daniel Akepyi no chance.
Five minutes into the second stanza, Roland Putsche nearly got the third goal for City but Akpeyi was on hand to keep out the midfielder's header.
Judas Moseamedi should have made it 3-0 for the Citizens on the hour-mark after being sent through by Teko Modise, but his low curling strike was saved by Akpeyi.
The Chilli Boys were struggling to break City down and resorted to playing long balls over the defence, which could not create clear-cut chances.
Chippa went agonisingly close to pulling a goal back with 10 minutes remaining but Macpuhu's glancing header shaved the woodwork.
Despite that chance for Chippa, City goalkeeper Sage Stephens had a relatively quiet night as the home side saw out the final stages to claim a vital win.
