Currently, Orlando Pirates top the PSL log standings after eight league games. There is only a point difference between the Buccaneers and the three teams that occupy positions two, three, and four. This, as many coaches often preach, is ideal as by the end of the first half of the season, the clubs all aim to keep near to the team in the number one spot.
SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has spoken about the topic in his weekly Clubhouse column. The former Kaizer Chiefs player pointed out that it is important for the local clubs to dominate in the league.
“I usually hear top coaches talk about the importance of staying within reach of the leading team during the first competitive phase of the periodization. You don’t want to get far from your original plan in terms of points collected. You look at number one to number four on the log standings and that’s pretty much where everyone would like to be.
“Most of the teams and coaches understand the importance of staying among the top teams on the log before the Christmas break. That puts you in a better position to reach your targets and stay close to the top position. I know that people, sometimes, have the tendency of talking about holding an umbrella when a team is sitting on top of the log.
“However, we’ve seen teams dominate the log standings from start to finish, while others come from nowhere and go on to win the league. Mamelodi Sundowns come to mind, when they snatched the league title in the final stretch of the season, despite their hectic schedule.
“That’s what happens when you stay within touching distance of the leading pack and that’s why you will hear coaches saying they would like to stay in the Top Eight bracket.”
Khumalo went on to talk about coaches plans and he sends his congratulatory message to Banyana Banyana. To read more on this, check out this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, issue 1092!
