SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo shared his views in this week’s column on the recent Bafana Bafana AFCON qualifier against Libya, where the team ended the match in a 0-0 draw.
Head coach, Stuart Baxter has come under much scrutiny from the football-loving nation after recruiting his son, Lee Baxter as the goalkeeper coach. However, Khumalo believes that the coach made the decision based on what he has assessed over the past few weeks.

“At the risk of people thinking I’m protecting coach Stuart Baxter, I feel people need to know and understand that as a head coach, you have a responsibility of putting a complete team together. You need people you can trust and people you feel are on the same page as you. It has nothing to do with favouritism or anything like that.
“It is just about principles and you can go anywhere and you will find the same principles. A new coach will come in, assess the setup and then make his recommendations. He won’t come in and tell you he doesn’t want this one and that one in his team.
“Whether he is right or wrong, time will tell. What I know is that you can tell when there are people imposed on the coach and when he’s made his own decision in his recruitment. It becomes evident for everyone to see and I believe the coaches should be allowed to make their own decisions and choices.”
