Football is a diverse sport and there are many different styles of play. This week, SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo shared his views on this topic.
The Bafana Bafana legend pointed out that over the years the game has changed and that it is not expected to find the teams of today playing in the same way that teams such as Manning Rangers did so about 20 years ago.
“One of the football discussions we had was about the style of play. What does it mean and what defines it? I found that very interesting because football is a diverse sport, you look at tactics and a whole lot of other factors that affect your style of play.
“We play different styles and that’s been the case for a long time now. Still, a question was asked as to why is it that about 20 years ago, our playing style was almost similar.
“You can’t tell me the likes of Arcadia Shepherds and Manning Rangers were playing the same style as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu or Moroka Swallows. Now, without sounding racist, we look at what made our style relevant. Look at Pirates, Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns and the acquisitions they’ve made in the past and what made them good. It was never about who was available in the market, but the way the team played. Whoever was recruited had to be suitable to the team’s style of play.
“So, while I was breaking down my take on the situation, I told my people that we have maintenance, build-up, sustained threat, fast tempo, direct play, counter-attack, crossing, high-pressing and individual brilliance, which are all contributory factors to the way you play. Why is playing style important? The playing style is the strength of the team, which represents individual members within the team.”
Khumalo went on into detail about playing style. To read more, check out the SportPesa column in this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, issue 1089!
