Doc: I’m not trying to take anything away from the two Soweto giants, but…
In this week’s SportPesa Clubhouse column, ambassador Doctor Khumalo shared his views on the upcoming season which is scheduled to take place this weekend, Saturday, August 4. There are some headline fixtures on the cards with Mamelodi Sundowns playing hosts to Kaizer Chiefs and Highlands Park getting their first taste of PSL action away against Orlando Pirates.
“Obviously most of the teams would like to start the season on a high note in order to set the tone. The first three league games are very important, and every coach will tell you that they want to go for all nine points. If you lose your first three games, getting back into the swing of things becomes like climbing a mountain.
“Like I said, this season promises to be more exciting than the previous one, which wasn’t easy at all. The competition was so tight and, from what I have seen, it looks like Mamelodi Sundowns will continue with their dominance. They haven’t changed much, and they’ve also acquired some really good quality. I think they are one of the teams with the best quality all-round, but you’ve got to bear in mind that they still have to compete in the CAF Champions League.
“The focus is now on Sundowns and they’ve earned that right! In the past, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs used to enjoy the attention given to Sundowns now and, like I said, Sundowns have earned it because they’ve been consistently on top of their game. I’m not trying to take anything away from the two Soweto giants, but Sundowns have taken their game to another level and that’s a fact.”
The Bafana Bafana legend went on to talk about the local clubs and the players that they have managed to sign for the season.
