The preparations for the 2018/19 season are fully underway. All the local clubs are in their pre-season camps and are competing in friendlies to gear-up for the upcoming campaign.
SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has spoken out in his weekly column about one factor that has played a huge role in the success of our local clubs and that is the strong foundation that has to be built in the development structures of each team.
“This week, I’d like to interrogate the players’ development to see what it entails, in terms of what it actually means. The reason for this discussion is based on the fact that a couple of people have asked and wanted to know how it works.
“You find that a player is signed from a particular development structure and the same team, along the way, comes back for the services of the same player and even goes as far as breaking the bank for a player they developed.
“Europeans seem to understand and value development more because it plays a major role in their game. Every team makes sure that their development structures are in place and doing well. Their core business is development because that’s the feeder for their senior teams.
“You get your Arsenal, Bayern Munich and many others – from what I have read on how they operate, they always expect to have a development product in their senior team every second year or so.
“Here at home, we see teams develop players, only for those players to be snatched by other teams instead of the natural progression to the senior team.”
