Doc: Sport Plays A Major Role Even In The Political Arena
France are world champions! The 2018 FIFA World Cup was world spectacle that captivated fans across the globe and SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo has congratulated Les Bleus.
"Let me start by congratulating France for a wonderful job of winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They really deserved it. Congratulations to the legendary Didier Deschamps, who became only the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach, after Brazilian legend Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. That’s no mean feat and the man really deserves his place among the other legends so, once again, congratulations to him. That’s a history-making achievement.
Khumalo continued as he pointed out that France's opponents, Croatia, gave their all in the encounter despite walking away with a runners-up medal.
"When you look at the final, you can’t question the commitment of both sets of players. Yes, the French won, but Croatia didn’t make things easy at all for them. It was such an impressive performance from both teams. It was really amazing to see how the hard-working French side pulled it off, with such a strong mental strength. Of course, the scoreline isn’t a true reflection of the game and I really expected the game to be so close that it would be decided on penalties.
"This France win reminds me of the 1995 Springbok and 1996 Bafana Bafana teams that won the Rugby World Cup and AFCON respectively. These two teams united our country through sport and the same thing is happening now in France. There were issues regarding African immigrants but I’m sure everyone is now celebrating and even forgot about their problems, which goes to show that sport plays a major role even in the political arena."
The Bafana Bafana legend also spoke out about late Nelson Mandela, who would have turned 100 today, Wednesday 18. To check out Doc's message to Madiba, get yourself a copy of Soccer Laduma, issue 1082, and read the SportPesa Clubhouse column!
