SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, bids farewell to another fallen football friend. The former Bafana Bafana legend shared his feelings about the night he heard the news of the passing of David Kekana.
“After hearing the news on Sunday night, I checked our previous WhatsApp conversations and the last message from him was on August 8, when he was updating me on the video footage he’d managed to get for our DVD project. What a humble gentleman! He was staying not too far from my place and we would spend a lot of time together. When you talk about people who’ve played a significant role in football coverage, David’s name will certainly be among those who were instrumental in the game. I don’t think there’s anyone out there who can say David was an arrogant media person, in all the years he’s been in the game. He was very direct and authentic in all his dealings. Fortunately enough, when I was roped in as an analyst at SABC, David was one of the guys I was working very closely with when it came to research. His knowledge was unbelievable and he really helped us a lot with his input and ensured that we delivered great content to the viewers.
“You can imagine how his passing has affected us. David was a very instrumental person at SABC Sport and will be missed by all. Taking nothing away from the rest of the team, but I don’t think David will ever get replaced. I’d like to thank the Kekana’s for sharing David with us. His presence will be missed and this is a really sad moment for all of us. When I visited David at hospital, last Sunday, I found some of his colleagues and family members on his bedside. I was hoping and praying that he’d pull through his illness. Knowing him to be a strong person who never gives up, I was really hoping he’d make it out of the hospital. The way he was suffering, I must say he fought a good fight. May his beautiful soul rest in peace. We will always remember him.
“At the time or writing this column, funeral details had not been confirmed by the family, but I hope that will be done soon” added Khumalo.
