Doc: A Life Well-Lived, Batch

SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, talks about the life of another fallen football hero in Mark Batchelor. In this segment, Doc reflects on his time with the former Chiefs and Pirates legend.

"The news of my former teammate and friend, Marc Bachelor’s tragic passing early last week came as a huge shock. I only learned of the sad news after I had submitted my column last week, but I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to Batch’s family, friends and the whole football fraternity. It is a sad moment for all of us knowing that another stalwart is no more. It wasn’t too long that I buried another friend and legend, Philemon Masinga, and here we are again. Batch’s tragic passing has really made me numb because it was the last thing I could have expected. Things happen for a reason, but the way he was assassinated was really bad. No one deserves to lose their life like that. Whatever happened, I don’t think Batch deserved to depart this earth like that! That was brutal.

"I’m talking like this because I know Btach very well. He was always full of life, smiling and jovial. Batch was always willing to help, comforting, caring and supportive. He was a stalwart who always gave his all on the field of play. He had a niggling injury that troubled him, but he always fought for the team. He was an unbelievable teammate, a guy that is always smiling. He had his crazy moments and enjoyed teasing people just to crack jokes. I must say that he was an unbelievable character. There was a stage when we were coached by Paul Dolezar and the two of them were very close. He was moved from the striking position to play as a defender. Bach had no problems or objections, accepted the challenge and he was so unbelievable! That showed the character he was as he just wanted to deliver for the team. The coach felt limited in his defensive options and Marc solved the problem for him, playing in an unfamiliar position.

"We had really great times with him at Kaizer Chiefs. He was a man of great stature, character and always willing to give a helping hand. There’s so much one can say about Batch when it comes to helping his teammates and friends in need."
