Belgium have been eliminated from the 2018 FIFA World Cup! France are now waiting to see who they will face in the final of this year’s World Cup.
In the first of the two semi-finals played last night, France beat Belgium 1-0. Tonight Croatia take on England, in what is expected to be a fiercely fought tie.
SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, expressed his views on the top players in the global showpiece in this week’s Clubhouse column and shares his thoughts on why it has been the most unpredictable tournaments ever.
“The 2018 FIFA World Cup will go down in history as one of the most unpredictable tournaments we’ve ever witnessed. If you look at those who have advanced to the last four – Croatia, Belgium, England and France – you’ll realise that not many people would have bet on them reaching this far. I must say all four teams really deserve to be in the semi-finals as they’ve earned their places through consistent and solid performances.
“France have been consistent and proved to be gelling well as the tournament progresses. Their team is well balanced because they have players with speed, tireless fighters in the middle of the park – the likes of N’Golo Kante who doesn’t get enough recognition, as he’s the pillar of that team. He’s an unsung hero, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe doing a great job up front.
“I must also mention how impressed I have been with England’s flexibility when it comes to their tactical approach. When they were playing friendlies leading up to the World Cup, Gareth Southgate used a slightly different approach to the one he’s using now. He kept changing players and experimented with different combinations and formations but, since the event started, he’s been consistent in his application. He’s also stuck with the same team and the results are there for everyone to see.”
