On Wednesday night, Bafana Bafana were sent packing after the national team were defeated 2-1 by Nigeria in the quarter-final round of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.
Last weekend the country was on a high after the Stuart Baxter-led team managed to knock out the tournament’s hosts, Egypt in a 1-0 win, however the celebrations did not last long.
SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo spoke out about the performance of the boys in that match, pointing out what the players can learn from their tactical abilities.
“What a lesson in terms of the tactical ability of our players. From a dead ball situation to a combinational play that killed the Egyptians and lead to our goal. We had a throw in and the opposition was caught napping and the combinational passes destroyed them. For Thembinkosi Lorch to be so composed inside the opposition box, wow, it takes a brilliant individual to do that. Most of the time, in that situation, players can’t beat the goalkeeper but Lorch did it in style. Obviously Lorch’s introduction paid dividends. Sometimes you roll the dice and things work out in you favour. That’s what the game is all about. The game-changers, the planning and execution are very important.
“When you walk in the corridors, you can’t help but feel that people are not sure about coach Stuart’s tactical approach. He has proven his tactical acumen because he introduced Lorch to influence the game with his skill and pace and it worked. Lorch has been creating and scoring goals for Orlando Pirates and being the Footballer of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season, he was always on top of his game and oozing confidence. He has proved that those accolades were not by fluke but because of consistency and work rate. Football can be a funny game because a player can have that spirit within himself, when he’d been doing well, and then he gets given a chance and things don’t work out. The technical team works with the team on a daily basis and do their planning, so they know what they are doing.”
Khumalo went on to speak about the match against Nigeria and pointed out key factors on the encounter.
