This week, SportPesa Clubhouse column ambassador, Doctor Khumalo spoke about the current Africa Cup of Nations tournament underway in Egypt and on the performances that saw Bafana Bafana sneak into the round of 16.
Khumalo went on to talk about the overall performances that have been displayed in the group stages of the tournament and his hopes for an interesting knockout round.
“I must say the tournament has improved especially from the second match day to the last group stages games, compared to some of the opening games that didn’t live up to expectations. I think most teams were a bit sluggish and too cautious in the opening games with little to no sense of urgency. Now the tournament is starting to liven up and we see good football on display. It is going to be interesting to see who will be playing who in the knockout stages, which is the boiling point of the competition where it is no longer about points but goals.
“During the group stages, you focus on collecting points and it doesn’t matter the score, but now it is a different story altogether. That’s the interesting part about playing a tournament because the dynamics change as you progress. While I know we might be out of the competition by the time you read this column, I remain optimistic that we might just make it through to the knockout stages and take it from there. This is definitely not the best position to find ourselves in, but we just have to wait and see what happens.”
The former Amakhosi midfield ace made mention of the Madagascan national team and how he has been impressed with their showings so far.
