The 2018 FIFA World Cup has been nothing short of thrills and spills. The action on the pitch has given football fanatics no reason to miss out on any of the action and SportPesa ambassador, Doctor Khumalo, shares his thoughts on the showpiece so far, singling out Russia’s performance on their home turf.
“The football showpiece started last Thursday, with host nation Russia showing Saudi Arabia flames with a 5-0 drubbing. But it’s really not about being hosts; you only have to look at the professionalism that the Russians displayed. They never stopped going forward and banging in those goals.
“Although they are the hosts, they are amongst the teams expected to exit the World Cup early because of their track record in the tournament. Yes, we might say the fact they scored five goals is because they were playing Saudi Arabia, who are not one of the strongest teams, but if that is the perception, then how did they qualify for the World Cup? The mere fact that a team has qualified for the World Cup has to earn them respect.”
In this week’s edition of Soccer Laduma, the Bafana Bafana legend touches on the VAR system that is being used at this year’s event.
