Doc Predicts His Soweto Derby Winner…

On Saturday, November 24, all roads lead to Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban as the Soweto Derby makes its round to KwaZulu-Natal. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will be going head-to-head in the first Telkom Knockout semi-final game of the weekend. With both clubs looking to step closer to the title on offer, this encounter promises to be one for the books.

Amakhosi legend, Doctor Khumalo gives us the lowdown on this weekend’s matches and makes his prediction on the derby. Do you agree with his choices?

Doc’s picks

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea (Draw)

This is going to be a very tough one because both teams are on top of their game. I’m not really sure why this happens but when these two meet, everyone ups their game, then when they play smaller teams it becomes a little different. They seem to take their foot off the paddle a bit. I think this is going to be a very interesting game and I feel it is going to be a draw.

Atletico Madrid v Barcelona (Barcelona win)

Barcelona is never an easy side to play let alone beat. Having said that, Atletico are no push-overs themselves and they seem to have a bit of an edge in terms of their tactical approach if most of their encounters I have watched are anything to go by. They are very good at denying the opposition space and I’m sure that’s exactly what they will be trying to do against Barca. Their defensive orientation is unbelievable because they don’t allow anyone to space to manoeuvre. Their downfall is usually lack of concentration at crucial stages. If they’re able to focus for 90mins, I would give this one to Atletico but Barcelona seem to have an edge based on the opposition’s tendency to lapse their concentration at crucial stages. I expect it to be a tough one, with Barca emerging as winners.

Kaizer Chiefs v Orlando Pirates (Chiefs win)

We are talking two South African football giants here and we all know what to expect from this one. The last time these two met, it was Giovanni Solinas’ first taste of the Soweto Derby and I think he will come better prepared this time around against the Buccaneers based on the experience he gained in the last game. I think this will be a draw that will be decided by penalties, with Chiefs edging Pirates.

Baroka FC v Bidvest Wits (Wits win)

Firstly, let me congratulate Baroka on reaching their first Telkom Knockout semi-final and they did really well in their last two games. Wits, on the other hand, will welcome the opportunity to go through to the final and defend the trophy they won last season. It is not going to be easy for Baroka and I feel this one will also be decided by penalties, with Wits reaching the final.
