Rusike: What Benni Teaches You…

Matthew Rusike says that the biggest lessons that can be learned from Benni McCarthy are those regarding the simplicity of being a good striker, and not overcomplicating matters.

Rusike grabbed a debut goal this week as he was thrown into the deep end for Cape Town City’s Nedbank Cup clash with Bidvest Wits, scoring 83 seconds in as he got onto the end of a Teko Modise cross.

The Zimbabwean has previously said that the chance to work under McCarthy’s tutelage played a big role in him coming back to South Africa, and he believes that – after spells in Sweden and Tunisia - he has become a better player.

When asked what can be learnt from his head coach, Bafana Bafana’s leading goalscorer, he told the Siya crew, “It’s the simple things. He teaches you the bare basics and if you follow those rules then you’ll be surprised how effective they can be. I think a lot of players seem to complicate things, and I think that was a flaw of mine in my younger years.

“You want to try and do everything to please the players around you, the coach, the fans, and it becomes too busy in your head. It’s about keeping things simple and doing your job. Win, lose or draw, if you do your job and give the best performance you can give then it’s ok.”

Though he’s not putting unrealistic targets on himself for the rest of the season, the 27-year-old is confident that he can play a role in helping City finish their campaign on a high.

He said, “It’s amazing to be contributing, to hit the ground running and to start scoring goals. That’s what every striker needs to be doing. I’m not going to say that I’m going to score 30 goals, but I do have the confidence in myself that I can put the ball in the back of the net.”

After getting off the mark for the Citizens, Rusike will now turn his attention to face his former club, Kaizer Chiefs, at his old stomping ground in Soweto.
