In this week’s SportPesa Clubhouse column, ambassador Doctor Khumalo shares his views on the 2018/19 season that will kick off this weekend, and on some player acquisitions.
All of the clubs in the Absa Premiership have bolstered their squads ahead of the new season, which has given much promise to the supporters.
“When you look at the players’ acquisition, only time will tell if they will be the right fit or not. The only way to find out is to judge them on the field of play because there are some individual players who make more difference than a group in a new team. A lot has changed because of new signings.
“If you look at Maritzburg United, until two seasons ago, they were always referred to as a ‘small team’. They raised eyebrows last season, after making a few changes in their team, and are now regarded as one of the contenders. None of the teams are easy to beat now, which is the beauty of this game. This shows that our League has improved and is now on another level, where you can’t really predict the outcomes or have just two teams fighting for honours.
“Having said that, there are still certain elements that are still worrying; for instance, the Top Goal Scorer award. I mean, to get that award for scoring 11 goals in 30 games is concerning and we really have to do something about it.
“Yes, scoring is not only dependant on strikers, but still, 11 goals isn’t enough! Our strikers and attackers need to up their game! Scoring so few goals in a season kind of dilutes the overall great performances by the respective teams and the league.”
