I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes, but just sharing my observations so far. I’m not saying this is a concern, but I’m sure when people analyse the results, they will get my point. Are we heading for another season where we will have a Top Goal Scorer will less than 20 goals? When you also look at the chances missed, let alone one-on-one situations that go unpunished, you start getting concerned. I’m not trying to put anyone under pressure, but just highlighting what some may not notice. We read, analyse, capture and interpret things differently sometimes. Back in the day, I’d sit with the chairman Kaizer Motaung and he’d tell me about how our wing play was not the same as in their time. I’d get goose bumps listening to some of the stories he’d share with me. I listen to Dr Irvin Khoza talking about how Pirates players used to finish teams off and you get blown away. I don’t know some of those guys, but I’d get goose bumps listening to these two gentlemen without taking anything personal. I never felt like they were being unfair by comparing us to the yesteryear players, instead I took it as a challenge to say I want people to have similar memories about me as well. Bra Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala used to tell us that a Bafana Bafana coach would have an unenviable task to select players during their time, that’s how much quality there was.

I’m saying all these things to motivate the current boys and when you talk about scoring goals, there is set-plays, combinational play, creativity, finishing, shooting and so many other elements that are involved in the game. You can’t tell me we don’t have any of those. If you’re not scoring, at least create. There’s a goal that was scored by Daniel Ramarutsi in a JPS final where he dribbled everyone from the centre line, including the goalkeeper, before hitting the back of the net. That’s individual brilliance, which is another crucial element in goalscoring. When we talk about scoring goals, there’s so much one can talk about and I hope the boys will give us more goals this season.
