Komphela On Chiefs’ Title Hopes: 21 Points Still To Play For…

Steve Komphela Knows Kaizer Chiefs Still Have 21 Points To Play For

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 05, 2018 09:07 AM

Steve Komphela still harbours hopes of pushing Mamelodi Sundowns for the Absa Premiership title, despite their 3-1 defeat in the Soweto Derby.

The Glamour Boys now find themselves in fifth place and eight points behind Masandawana with seven matches to go, with their bitter rivals, Orlando Pirates, far better placed to take on the log leaders.

Luvoyo Memela got a second half brace to add to Thembinkosi Lorch’s opening goal as the Buccaneers put three goals past Itumeleng Khune for the first time this season, putting a severe dent in their title aspirations.

Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, Komphela says that they’re disappointed to see their unbeaten run come to an end.

He said, “Our unbeaten run came to an end at the wrong time… We had a good first half though, and Pirates’ first goal was unnecessary. Then we equalised from a set-piece, which we know we can do well. Thereafter we dominated and could have killed the game.

“However, to lose 3-1 is tough. We have to reflect and see how we can rectify the mistakes made. I don’t think we will sleep until after the regeneration session on Sunday morning. You learn from games like these.”

Meanwhile, when asked whether the Amakhosi were still in the title race, he replied, “Seven times three gives 21, that’s 21 points still to play for. We just have to keep pushing. A win could have taken us to heaven, but this didn’t happen. We have a responsibility to keep performing. We are performers, we are artists. The show must go on.”

Chiefs’ next league game sees them face AmaZulu as they seek a return to winning ways.

Okay , let us put some sense to your numbers game. Out of 23 games, you won 8 matches which is about 34% success rate. You have 7 games left, @ 34% you are likely to win 2 matches. Does that help you much Mr Kompela?! No it does not. And your problem is not losing the derby, but endless draws and loses.

The day Steve and his players stop with their denial is the day Chiefs will change and do better. They were completely outplayed on Saturday and all they do is deny it. He also needs to be brave enough to leg go of the unnecessary senior players they are keeping at the team. If as a youngster I see a useless senior getting his contract renewed over and over again without any meaningful contribution to the team, I won't even worry about my own performances. Complacency is the order of the day at Chiefs and not taking responsibility at all. They need to take a few lessons from Pirates. Pirates are in a process of a complete revamp after a thorough look at themselves and didn't deny their shortcomings. Chiefs need to stop making as if some of their players signed lifetime contracts with them. Talking about the Derby of the weekend. I just don't think Katsande was supposed to play in that game and it showed, with the errors he committed. I don't blame him though. I'm by the way a Pirates supporter who just happen to love the game more than my team.

@Pirates_999, Tate Motaung, like some of us, is a victim of Prof Komphela 's tricks, jokes aside, the man is exceptionally good in convincing people that tomorrow will be better than today. I would have fell to his tricks if I was in Tate Motaung 'shoes.

@leratosetlhogo, Prof Komphela is a philosopher, he specialises on defining and defending concepts, he is always confusing the old man, Kaizer Motaung. Family business have postponed his dismissal many times because of his rare expertise.

@ominouskhosi so are you saying that Khompela must be given contract extension? Pitso turned things around at Down because he understands what is needed of him but this guy is given free role at KC and no one is bold enough to challenge him, it's as if the Motaungs are scared of his big English words. I'm sorry but this guy must leave us in peace he won't produce anything at KC he'd rather build until Jesus come back.
