Orlando Pirates coach, Eric Tinkler has assured fans that he can deal with pressure despite receiving assurances that he will not lose his job even if his team lose to Kaizer Chiefs in today’s Soweto derby.
The 45-year-old received chairman, Irivin Khoza’s backing ahead of the big game, but reminded his doubters that he is used to being under pressure to perform, having played for a number of European clubs in Portugal, Italy and England. He also earned 48 international caps for Bafana Bafana.
“I am used to pressure,” he told the Siya crew.
“I played in Europe for 16 years and I was relegated on four occasions and all that time I was under pressure. Even when I was called for Bafana others questioned my call up and I was always under pressure to perform so today makes no different because I am used to pressure.”
The former Bidvest Wits defender said that the pressure on his team today is to recover their position in the PSL standings, having fallen to 11th in a disappointing campaign so far this season.
“The only difference is that today we have to win, not to take away the pressure, but to move out of the position we are in on the log table. The players and everyone in the team knows that," Tinkler observed.
Orlando Pirates will take on Kaizer Chiefs at 15:30 today at the FNB stadium.
