Moroka Swallows started of their 2012/2013 campaign well, by lifting the MTN8 trophy, however ultimately went on to miss out on a top eight place on the last day of the season.
Soccer-Laduma contacted the club’s head coach, Zeca Marques, for his take on the season and he explained that he was happy with the way the Dube Birds started, but that he was upset with their bad run of form in the middle of the season.
Marques said, “Obviously we were delighted to start the season with a good performance, with a win and a trophy. From that point of view I’m delighted. However, I’m very disappointed and saddened that we slumped and went through a bad run but we managed to pull things together, with the leadership and the whole of the team just pulling together.
The head coach went on to say that he felt his side were unlucky to finish outside the top eight, with defeats for Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs to Maritzburg United and University of Pretoria unexpectedly sealing their fate.
He said, “Defensively we had our biggest problem, but with Larry (Cohen) and Roger (da Costa) coming in there, and things changed. Both of them together they played well, they gelled and that rubbed off on the rest of the team. You can’t take anything away from that. We came back strong and at the end of the day we missed out on the top eight by one point, who would have thought that both Pirates and Chiefs would have lost on the last day, if either had won we would have made the top eight.”
Swallows will not get the chance to retain the MTN8 crown that they won this season, however they will be looking to add to their squad and aiming for more silverware in their next campaign.
