Micho In Zambia: There Will Be Problems

Zambia legend Noah Chivuta is concerned that Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic might not get enough support in his role with Chipolopolo.

The former Orlando Pirates mentor was appointed in January as coach of the ex-Africa Cup of Nations champions, following a brief spell in Egypt as the coach of Zamalek.

“Seeing Micho and the professionalism that he has, he can really build the Zambia national team. In Uganda he was given that platform and they were listening to whatever he said and assisted him in the things he wanted to do. So, I don’t think there was a lot of interference. The players were also onto him,” Zambian midfielder Noah Chivuta told the Siya crew.

“Now he comes to Zambia and there will be problems. One – there will be interference from the FA. Two – the government! When the team starts playing and two or three games don’t go his way, it will become a problem. I don’t know if he can be given the same platform he was given at the other national teams he has been at, as well as Pirates. I don’t know if he will be given the freedom to express himself his way. But Zambia is a different place altogether. There will be a lot of interference and if he is not strong he will find it difficult. Again, if he doesn’t obey to whatever they are saying it will be a problem. The only time a foreign coach did well with Zambia was when we won the Africa Cup of Nations under Herve Renard,” he said.

“The only thing that helped is that Kalusha (Bwalya) was the president and his relationship with the government was okay. Also, he (Renard) was very stubborn. He stood his ground on what he wanted. With Micho things are not working his way already. They have been fighting about his contract. The FA hasn’t had the elections. We don’t even know who’s going to be the president because they are still fighting. The government is saying that the criteria that was used for him to be the coach was not right. There are a lot of things which are happening outside of football. But for him being the coach, there’s no doubt. He can transform the team,” Chivuta added.
