The first round of the Telkom Knockout kicked off this past weekend, with no less than four matches going to extra-time and being decided on penalties.
Friday evening saw Maritzburg United claim a first round shock win, over Gavin Hunt’s Bidvest Wits on penalties. Saturday saw the match of the weekend, as Cape Town City locked horns with Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town stadium. A wonderful strike from Kermit Erasmus couldn’t see Benni McCarthy’s team to victory as Samir Nurkovic levelled the match, which the Glamour Boys eventually won on penalties.
Orlando Pirates had to wait until the 83rd minute to earn Rulani Mokoena his first cup win as interim head coach, against a stubborn Stellenbosch FC side. SuperSport United also laboured their way to victory against Telkom Knockout defending champions, Baroka FC.
And on Sunday, Mamelodi Sundowns showed the country why they are still the team to beat, as they put five past AmaZulu FC at the Lucas Moripe stadium.
