You Choose The Team Of The Week

Soccer Laduma’s ‘Team of the Week’ is a feature in each and every Soccer Laduma edition, highlighting the top performers. This week we will feature a team from the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

Selections are based on the performances of players in Round 2 of the 2015 African Cup of Nations that is currently underway in Equatorial Guinea.

In Group A on Wednesday, January 21, hosts Equatorial Guinea and 2013 Nations cup finalists, Burkina Faso, played to a 0-0 stalemate, with both sides finding it difficult to find the back of the net. In the later fixture, Congo Brazzaville stunned group favourites, Gabon, with a 1-0 scoreline to claim their first victory at the Nations Cup in 41 years, courtesy of a 48th minute strike by Prince Oniangue.

At Nuevo Estadio de Ebebiyin in Group B, Tunisia pulled a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over 2012 Afcon champions, Zambia. Chipolopolo took an early lead four minutes into the second half through sensational midfielder, Emmanuel Mayuka. However the Eagles of Carthage had other plans as they staged back from a goal down by netting two goals in the space of just under 20 minutes, with strikes from Ahmed Akaichi in the 70th minute and Yassine Chikhaoui’s 88th minute goal sealing the three points for Georges Leekens’ side.  The Cape Verde Islands played to a 0-0 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Group C saw 2014 FIFA World Cup participants, Ghana, claim their first win of the tournament after they had lost 2-1 to Senegal in their opening encounter. Inspirational striker and skipper, Asamoah Gyan, who missed the clash against the Lions of Teranga, left it late for the Black Stars as he stroke with the last kick of the game to hand Avram Grant’s side all the three points over Algeria. In the later clash, South Africa, who looked to redeem themselves following their disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Algeria, once against failed to turn their endless opportunities into goal scoring chances. Bafana Bafana were eventually held to a 1-1 draw by Senegal.

Group D sees all four teams locked on two points after two rounds of fixtures. On Saturday, January 24, tournament favourites, Cote D'Ivoire, once again had to come from one goal down to claim a 1-1 draw against Mali, who had taken an early sixth minute lead through Bakary Sako. Cameroon and Guinea also settled for one point each in the late evening outing with the scores ending at 1-1.

The team will always be set up in a standard 4-4-2 formation, selected by Soccer Laduma's team of respected journalists.

The Soccer Laduma journos are currently in deliberation over this week’s selections. In the meantime we want to hear from you who you think should be in the Soccer Laduma ‘Team of the Week’.

Every Monday you will get the chance to post your ‘Team of the Week’. See how close you get to the one which will appear in the new Soccer Laduma on Wednesday.
