On Friday evening, the first Cape Town Derby took place as Cape Town City FC hosted Ajax Cape Town. The encounter started at a blistering pace  but the decisive moment came in the 21st minute as Bhongolwethu Jayiya beat Ajax goalkeeper Brandon Petersen at the far post. Despite chances for both sides after that, City managed to see out a 1-0 win.

New PSL contenders, Baroka FC, travelled to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in search for their first win for the season. The away side started the match on a high, forcing saves out of Stars’ goalkeeper, Mbongeni Mzimela.Baroka were then awarded a penalty in the 40th minute that was netted by Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali and despite a push from Dikwena after the break, the Bakgaga defence would not budge.

Polokwane City played host to Highlands Park at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Rise and Shine broke the deadlock in the sixth minute as Thobani Mncwango netted from close range. Collins Mbesuma managed to level matters in the 29th minute from the spot, but Polokwane netted again through Sipho Jembula. The back-and-forth battle continued with Charlton Mashumba scoring his second goal of the season, but Polokwane had the last say with Jabu Maluleke scoring the winner.

Kaizer Chiefs looked to continue their revival against Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium but had to hold of an early charge from Maritzburg, with Itumeleng Khune forced into some fine saves. However, Chiefs took the lead in the 19th minute as Lorenzo Gordinho scored from a corner before William Twala's neat finish ended the encounter..

Free State Stars were in search for their first win of the season at the King Zwelethini Stadium as they played against SuperSport United. The away side started brightly as they forced United’s goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams into a few saves. SuperSport slowly came into the game and narrowly missed out on taking the lead as Kingston Nkhatha’s header went wide. That proved to be the case for the rest of the game as it ended goalless.

The Dr Molemela Stadium saw the encounter between Bloemfontein Celtic and Golden Arrows. With nothing separating the two sides during the first half of the match, the second half came to life as Alfred Ndengane put the hosts in the lead from a deflected long-range strike. After poor marking from the Celtic defence, Nkanyiso Mgwengwe then levelled matters for Arrows and Wayde Jooste sent them top with the winning goal in the 76th minute.

Every Monday you will get the chance to post your ‘Team of The Week’. See how close you get to the one which appears in the new edition of Soccer Laduma on Wednesday.
