Yorke: Moyes Better Than Mourinho For United

In a career that spanned over three decades, Trinidad and Tobago’s ‘Smiling Assassin’ scored 123 goals in the English Premier League, won two league titles, an FA Cup and top scored in the 1998/99 Champions League which Manchester United famously went on to win.

As one of Man United’s elite group of former players, Dwight Yorke says he was shocked to hear of manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement at the end of the last campaign.

“I don’t’ think anyone saw it coming with the way the team was going, and there was no sign of his health deteriorating other than his hip, but he has stated his reasons why he retired. He wanted to spend more time with his wife,” said Yorke, in an exclusive interview with Soccer-Laduma recently on behalf of Smirnofff 1818.

“I think if you listen over the last few weeks in terms of people paying tribute to Sir Alex – present players and past players – it’s always the same thing in many respects. He’s obviously a winner.”

So what is Yorke’s opinion of new Man United manager David Moyes and can he do the job? “I think he is the best candidate. When you’re talking about longevity, if you look at the history of managers at United then longevity is there. They’re always looking for a manager who will stick around. Moyes obviously offers that, Jose Mourinho is like a gypsy. I think if Mourinho had gone to the club he would have undone everything that Sir Alex as done,” concluded Yorke.

The player goes on to talk about the epic 1999 season, the ‘telepathy’ of the team, playing alongside Andy Cole and Ferguson’s famous hairdryer treatment! Read the full Smirnoff 1818 interview in the latest issue of Soccer-Laduma!
