Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana squad that will take part in the 2014 CAF African Nations Championship, after the 31-year-old sustained a knee injury during his club's 1-0 win over Golden Arrows following a collision with Abafana Bes’thende defenders.
Letsholonyane was initially part of the 23-man squad that was announced by Gordon Igesund on Monday, 23 December, but had to after scan results revealed that he would be out for about 4-6 weeks.
Coach Gordon Igesund has roped in Asavela Mbekile of Moroka Swallows in his place, and has now also moved his training camp to take place on Thursday, January 2, 2014 in Cape Town.
Despite fears that Kaizer Chiefs will not be releasing their players for the CHAN tournament as reported by club football manager, Bobby Motaung, SAFA President, Danny Jordaan, has reiterated that an agreement has been struck between club bosses of Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns.
This meeting agreed that the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs which was set for January 28, has now been brought forward to January 23, which is a rest period between the last round and quarter-finals of the CHAN tournament. This will help Kaizer Chiefs from having a congested fixture as they are due to participate in the CAF Champions League later this season.
“The meeting was cordial and was held in the pursuit of the best interest of football and the country. I want to thank Irvin Khoza, Kaizer Motaung and Patrice Motsepe for their cooperation to ensure that South Africa’s best interest is served. "This decision was conveyed to coach Gordon Igesund with the instruction to finalise his team selection,” confirmed Jordaan on safa.net.
South Africa has been drawn alongside Mozambique, Mali and Nigeria in Group A.
CHAN is scheduled to take place between 11 January and 1 February in Cape Town, Polokwane and Mangaung (Bloemfontein).
