World Cup Winner Confirms City Interest Pre Benni Appointment

World Cup Winner Claudio Gentile Confirms Cape Town City Interest Pre Benni Appointment

By Soccer Laduma - Jul 11, 2017 02:59 PM

Claudio Gentile, who won the FIFA World Cup during his time as a player in 1982 with Italy, confirmed that he was previously contacted to take on the head coach role at Cape Town City, prior to Benni McCarthy’s appointment.

City confirmed the appointment of McCarthy last month, June 12, in a space of seven days following former head coach, Eric Tinkler’s exit.

At the time of Tinkler’s departure, the Siya crew revealed that the likes of Gentile, Jean-Michel Cavali, former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Hristo Stoichkov, were all on the list of possible candidates to take over the then-vacant head coach role at the 2016 Telkom Knockout champions.

Gentile, who previously coached the U21 Italian side, has since confirmed to Soccer Laduma that he was contacted at the time to take on the role at the helm of the Mother City-based club.

"I got phone calls in this regard, but there were no premises to find an agreement. All serious proposals should be screened, and then decided on its merits,” Gentile confirmed.

However, indications are that Chairman, John Comitis, has chosen his right man for the job, as McCarthy gets his team prepared for the upcoming 2017/18 campaign.
