Wits have expressed their relief that injured striker, Getaneh Kebede, played no part in his country's recent World Cup qualifying defeat to Nigeria.
Kebede was recently called up to the Ethiopia squad despite carrying a serious ankle injury which he is still recovering from. At the time, a source at Wits expressed concern that Ethiopia might risk playing the 21-year-old as the game was so important. The source revealed that there could be big ramifications if the player was used and sustained another injury.
However, a source at Wits has since revealed that Kebede was not used against Nigeria, much to the relief of the club.
The source said, "Yes, it was a concern because there is that kind of tension between club and country. You're never sure what's going to happen when you let your player go. Fortunately for the club it seems Ethiopia followed the protocol and stayed in touch with our medical team on a daily basis.
"The club were slightly concerned because every day it seemed he was making more of a dramatic recovery. But they were professional about it and he didn't play in the end."
