Wits Outmuscle Maritzburg

ABSA Premiership

Result: Maritzburg 1-3 Wits

Date: 16 December 2013

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Wits looked comfortable as they easily dispatched Maritzburg United 3-1 at the Harry Gwala Stadium in their ABSA Premiership clash on Monday.

The first real goal scoring opportunity fell to Maritzburg’s David Booysen who fired wide with just less than five minutes on the clock.

The visitors hit back almost immediately and opened the scoring at the Harry Gwala Stadium, when Matthew Pattison scored with his right-footed shot past Shu-Aib Walters in the Maritzburg goal with 7 minutes on the clock.

Getaneh Kebede then had another chance for the Students but he fired his shot just wide in the 17th minute.

It seemed to be one-way traffic and on the half-hour mark the visitors almost doubled their lead but Kofi Dankwa’s shot was brilliantly saved by the feet of Walters.

Thokozani Sekotlong then had a chance to equalise for the hosts but he could not find the target with his 35th minute shot.

The People’s Choice then came close once more when Heinrich Isaacks forced a smart stop from Moeneeb Joseph’s in the Wits goal in the final minute of the first-half.

Wits did double their advantage when Ryan Chapman played in Ethiopian international Getaneh Kebede who finished off confidently with his right-foot to make it 2-0 to the Clever Boys on the hour mark.

Sekotlong then pulled a goal back for the home side in the 82nd minute to setup a tense final few minutes at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Clinton Larsen’s men pushed forward in vain as they attempted to snatch a vital home point but Wits striker Calvin Kadi put the game out of sight when the substitute made it 3-1 to the Clever Boys in stoppage time.
