Gavin Hunt is waiting for a conclusive medical report on one of his star players ahead of the start of the new 2019/20 season, but the Bidvest Wits coach has told journalists it’s not good news.
Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon at the unveiling of 10 players as well as the club’s new kit, Hunt revealed that left back Sifiso Hlanti has returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with a serious injury.
“I am not a doctor, so I don’t know actually how long he is out. But it is not good, he is certainly out for a while. It is disappointing because he came back with an injury from the national team,” said Hunt.
Wits open their Absa Premiership campaign with an away game to AmaZulu on August 3 and that, according to the coach, will be the first of several matches Hlanti will miss out on given the seriousness of his injury.
The player featured in all five of Bafana’s games at the AFCON, his most memorable performance coming in their shock 1-0 win over hosts Egypt to progress to the quarterfinals of the competition, where they lost to Nigeria. Hlanti was tasked with closing down Egypt's dangerman Mohamed Salah, and delivered.
