Wits' experienced central defender, Matthew Booth, could be close to hanging up his boots.
The 37-year-old, who enjoyed a successful 20-year career in Europe and in South Africa, is currently away on holiday in Cuba as he contemplates his future.
The defender spent last season at Wits where he helped the club finish third in the PSL standings. Soccer Laduma understands that Wits have offered the player a one-year extension to his current deal, however it seems more likely at this stage that he will hang up his boots.
A source close to the player revealed that the 37-cap Bafana Bafana international was more than likely going to retire from the game in the near future.
The source said, "Nothing is official yet with regard to his future. Wits wanted him to stay another year, but it seems likely he's going to finish his career now. He's currently on holiday in Cuba with his family, and will probably decide what he wants to do after that. If he does retire, he wants to go out gracefully and doesn't want a big fuss in the media. He'll be back from holiday in a few weeks' time, and there will be an official announcement at that point."
In other news coming out of Wits, the crew understands that Benjani Mwaruwari, Sipho Mngomezulu, Keamogetse Wolff, Letsie Koapeng, Steven Hoffman and Ayanda Lubelo won't be offered new deals at the club as well. All six players will be allowed to leave the club when their current deals expire.
