The absence of striker Mwape Musonda from Black Leopards’ opening Absa Premiership fixture at the weekend has again cast doubt over his immediate future.
With Lidoda Duvha hosting rivals Polokwane City at the Thohoyandou Stadium and losing narrowly by 1-0, their hitman had been left out completely.
But Siya sources have now explained that while last season’s Golden Boot winner remains keen on a move abroad, his omission was due to his fitness. His late arrival for pre-season meant that he was behind on the schedule, sources said, though he had been featuring in friendly matches in the lead up to their league opener.
It remains to be seen whether the forward will return to action when Leopards face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday night in Durban.
The crew reported in June that Musonda had expressed his desire for a new challenge away from Leopards, where he has spent the previous two years as the top goalscorer. His representatives, setting the record straight, claimed Musonda had been in Dubai after asking for more time off and was not AWOL amid interest from the so-called Big Three in South African following his 18 goals in 31 games from all competitions.
It’s unlikely now that Musonda will join any of the local teams, and Siya sources indicated to the crew last week that there was still interest in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
