Why bench your leading goalscorer?
That’s the question Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt has faced throughout much of the 2019/20 season about striker Gift Motupa, the man with the most goals for the Clever Boys this season despite hardly being a regular…
Motupa has so far managed 12 goals in 25 matches from all competitions, including an impressive six goals in seven CAF Confederation Cup games – but he still found himself often used as an impact player, with Hunt being criticised for it.
“It’s not because of me not playing him regularly, it’s because he is always injured or maybe not fit enough,” the coach explained to the Siya crew.
“There’s always been a bit of a problem here and there. He has been out now for weeks with an injury and that hasn’t helped us. The issue has always been that he wasn’t fit enough, otherwise he would be in the starting eleven – am I stupid or what? He is my top goalscorer, of course I want him to play. People get the wrong side of the story that I don’t like give. I said ‘are you crazy? Have you been here Monday to Friday? He’s been injured’.”
Motupa, who emerged a surprise target for Mamelodi Sundowns in January, did not feature in Wits’ previous six matches before the Premier Soccer League suspended football matches due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
“When they ask why he has been on the bench it’s because I’ve got no one else and if he is on the bench he can only play 15-20 minutes if he’s lucky. That’s how it’s been a lot of the season. The Sundowns thing also spun his head – that made me really upset. It’s not the way you do things – come to the front door,” said Hunt.
