Why Brockie Won't Face Sundowns

On transfer Deadline Day, Mamelodi Sundowns loaned one of their high-profile signings to Maritzburg United, but have inserted a clause to prevent him facing the Brazilians whilst on loan.

Jeremy Brockie was a surprise late move in the transfer window with the striker joining former coach, Eric Tinkler at the Team of Choice. The Kiwi attacker thanked Patrice Motsepe for making the move happen, but Sundowns appear to have reversed their policy on loan players facing their parent club.

Having not allowed their loan players to face Sundowns up until the end of the 2013-14 season, with Musa Ntayama (Bloemfontein Celtic) and Themba Zwane (Mpumalanga Black Aces) amongst those forced to sit in the stands, Motsepe changed policy.

He said at the 2013/14 Sundowns season awards function, "I don't want players not to be playing. If a player is not in the plans of the coach, we should allow him to play elsewhere, including playing against Sundowns.”

That has led to all loan players being allowed to face Masandawana for the last five seasons and some have even scored against their parent club, including Dove Wome, Thamsanqa Sangweni and Bongi Ntuli, amongst others.

However, for this particular deal, Brockie has been denied the chance to line up against Sundowns in Maritzburg United’s next game and will instead have to wait until the 27 September to make his debut against Chippa United. It remains to be seen if the same clause applies to the loan of Nyiko Mobbie, who joined Stellenbosch FC on a temporary basis.

Will Brockie find his scoring touch at Maritzburg? Are Sundowns right to prevent their player from facing the club whilst on loan? Let us know by commenting below!
