Thabo Mnyamane - A Quiet Player Of The Season Contender

He’s contributed to more goals than Lebogang Manyama and Tendai Ndoro, so why aren’t more people talking about SuperSport United success story, Thabo Mnyamane?

The 24-year-old’s story is an amazing one. Four years ago he was hoping for his big break as he showed off his talents in the 2013 Varsity Cup, and now he’s spearheading Matsatsantsa’s title push and a part of the Bafana Bafana setup.

At 21 Mnymane was quite late to the professional game. He was studying at North-West University – studies that he finished – when he burst onto the scene and persuaded University of Pretoria that he was worthy of a pro contract.

A few years later the attacker is flourishing under the tutelage of Stuart Baxter, and is currently enjoying the best season of his career as SuperSport battle on three fronts in the Absa Premiership, Nedbank Cup and CAF Confederation Cup.

While there were several clubs chasing his signature at the end of last season, SuperSport acted swiftest, and will be very happy with their signing so far, with the forward bagging five goals and seven assists in the league so far.

His teammates. His head coach. His own hard work. Mnyamane credits all of those things for his current form, and he also believes that their current record-breaking run of 19 games without defeat is helping give them confidence.

“I think the good run of the team overflows onto players,” he says. “For the team to do well it means the players are doing well both as a collective and as individuals... The coach always tells me to be in the box and chances will avail themselves.

“The support from the guys helps a lot as well. I think it's more of growth, I'm learning new things every day from the old man.”

Having recently equalled his previous best of seven goals in all competitions in the top-flight, Mnyamane only has two other targets… What are they? “Get more goals, and help the team get some silverware. I need my first gold, man!”

Lastly, the Bafana international, who will be in camp this weekend, had some words of advice for those who – like he was – are waiting for the break that doesn’t feel like it’s going to come. He said, “Keep pushing, man. Keep praying, and don't give up! It's going to take a lot of determination and commitment, but it's worth it at the end...”
