Why Bafana Didn’t Move…

Despite the announcement that Bafana Bafana were to be granted the FIFA rankings points for the win against Spain, there was shock when they remained ranked in 61st place.

Bafana surpassed all expectations when they managed to claim a 1-0 win over the world and European champions earlier this month, although there was controversy as Spain used a seventh substitute, potentially rendering the game null and void.

However, as reported by the Siya crew earlier today, FIFA have confirmed that the game will not be downgraded to a practice match, and that Bafana would be granted the 555 points accrued for the victory.

Yet despite the points being granted, many fans were shocked to see that Bafana remained in 61st place on the rankings, even with the 555 points added.

The reason that Gordon Igesund’s side didn’t make any movement on the rankings list is relatively simple. A nation’s overall points in the system are calculated by adding together the points averages over the past four years. See below:

POINTS IN THE PAST 4 YEARS

Average

Weight

Average Points

2010

357.49

20%

71.5

2011

298.56

30%

89.57

2012

128.05

50%

64.03

2013

316.39

100%

316.39

TOTAL 541

With this in mind, the importance of Bafana’s win against Spain was depreciated because of other results in the last 12 months, and add to that the fact that neither 2011 nor 2012 were good years for Mzansi football, their points total is not great.

Basically put, South Africa’s ranking position did not increase greatly because one big result isn’t enough to raise Bafana’s average substantially, however, should Igesund’s men build on the Spain win and keep winning, then their position could improve drastically in the coming months.
