Chiefs’ Keeper Crisis: Who’s To Blame?

The Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper crisis deepened at the weekend when Daniel Akpeyi failed to deal with a relatively easy-to-handle effort from striker Walter Musona in their 1-1 draw away to Polokwane City on Saturday.

A fuming Ernst Middendorp, the Amakhosi coach, told reporters afterwards he could no longer explain the costly errors having had to recently drop Virgil Vries in favour of new recruit Akpeyi.

First choice goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was ruled out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, forcing the club to go into the market.

The unavailability of their no.1 keeper aside, a club the size of Chiefs should still have good enough to cover. Should the recruitment of these goalkeepers be questioned? Who is to blame?

Lee Baxter – the goalkeeper coach

Did the man who is in charge of making sure the last line of defence is waterproof have a say in who should have come in to deputise for Khune when Brilliant Khuzwayo left to join Orlando Pirates? Were Vries and Akpeyi his recommendations?

Middendorp – the coach

He can be excused for what now appears a blunder by the club to sign Vries – he found him there. But he’s not off the hook for Akpeyi.

His comments following the transfer deadline day deal with Chippa United to bring the Nigerian on board suggest Middendorp had a huge say in who the club could bring in at such short notice.

Bobby Motaung – football manager

Was there more he could have done to hold on to Khuzwayo, who was subsequently replaced by Vries, deemed surplus to requirements by Baroka FC in June? Chiefs had targeted Reyaad Pieterse, Thela Ngobeni and Darren Keet, but it looks like they simply settled for Akpeyi because he was a more viable option.
